Jd_power The results are in from the latest J.D. Power and Associates annual Initial Quality Survey for fewest defects in new vehicles.  This is the most watched industry measure of quality straight from the assembly plant, tallying how many problems show up in the first 90 days of ownership.

Porsche took the top honors this year with the fewest defects per 100 vehicles followed by Acura, Mercedes-Benz, Lexus, and Ford in order of finish.  The marks the first time in the studies 24 years that Ford has cracked the top five.  Generally, says J.D. Ford’s “Send to Sync” and 911 Assist

June 22, 2010

Ford recently announced a couple of updates to their SYNC system that's powered by Microsoft.  The first, and an extremely great addition, is the ability for SYNC's 911 Assist feature to send your exact GPS coordinates to authorities in the event of an accident so they know your exact location.  To me, this is a huge addition to all the cool things SYNC does.  The best part of this life saving feature is the cost, it's free unlike GM's On-Star service that can provide similar services and cost around $299 per year after the initial subscription runs out.

Sync 911 Assist

The second new addition to SYNC is the "Send to SYNC" function.  "Send to SYNC" allows drivers with there Bluetooth enabled phone to send Google Maps and Destinations to their cars via an existing cloud-based in-car app called Traffic, Directions, and Information (TDI for short).

Today in History – June 21

June 21, 2010

Here are a few fun facts about today's date, June 21…today in history.

1788 – 222 years ago in 1788 New Hampshire became the ninth state to enter the United States of America.  The fishing colony first settled in 1623, and was named in 1630 by Captain John Mason after his Hampshire, England home, was a part of the Massachusetts colony.  In 1679 it became a seperate royal colony.  Concord, the capital of the Granite State, was also central to much of the Revolutionary War. The official state bird is the purple finch, and has a matching state flower, the purple lilac.

1731 – Martha Washington's birthday (first First Lady of the U.S., wife of 1st U.S. President George Washington)

1853 – The envelope folding machine was patented by Dr. Russell L. Hawes of Worcester, MA.

Weekend Getaway: Garner State Park

June 21, 2010

It’s that time of the year again.  Summer is here and school’s out…what to do, where to go?  If you’re looking for a quick weekend getaway within driving distance from San Antonio, try Garner State Park which is about 1 hour and 45 minutes from downtown San Antonio.  Garner State Park is located on the Frio River in Concan, TX.  Garner State Park is one of Texas' most popular summer getaways.  Whether it's swimming, fishing, paddling, or tubing, most visitors to Garner find a way to get on or in the water. However, there are also "dry" activities such as miniature golf, birding, nature trails, hiking and more.  Garner State Park is a must see if you live in the greater San Antonio area.  I will warn you though, when you jump in your tube on the Frio river for the first time, you will realize just how the Frio river got its name.

Garner State Park

History: Garner State Park is 1419.8 acres (10 water acres of the Frio River) of recreational facilities in northern Uvalde County. Garner State Park is found in the northern part of Uvalde County. Located thirty miles north of Uvalde and seven miles north of Concan, Garner State Park has ten acres of riverfront. The park, was acquired in 1934-36 and was named for John Nance Garner (Cactus Jack) of Uvalde, who served as Vice-president of the United States from 1933-41.

Natural Features:The park has an abundance of White-tailed and Axis deer, Rio Grande Turkey, Morning Dove, Eastern Bluebirds, Golden-cheeked Warblers, Black Rocks Squirrels, Fox Squirrels, Raccoons, and many other animal species.

There is also an abundance of trees such as Mesquite, Texas Red Bud, Bald Cypress, Western Ash Juniper, Spanish Oak, lacy oak, Texas Madrone, Cedar Elm, and Pecan, as well as Mountain Laurel and Agarita shrubs.

Geology:  Deep canyons, crystal-clear streams, high mesas, and carved limestone cliffs are the brush strokes in the geological painting of this intriguing terrain.  Many back country paved roads wind through canyons along streams here, offering the traveler a different pace from the freeway rush.

The rock formations in this area are early Cretaceous in age, deposited over millions of years in warm, shallow seas that once covered Texas.  The Glen Rose formation, a collection of limestone, shale, marl, and siltstone beds, was deposited along the shifting margins of the sea where dinosaurs roamed in great numbers, leaving their footprints in the sands.  The cretaceous Sea then spread over Texas, depositing the Edwards Formation (limestone) over the Glen Rose beds.  This sequence of strata, Glen Rose below, Edwards above, is found throughout this area.

Dual Zone Climate Control Survey

June 19, 2010

I stumbled upon this post on Autoblog about a survey on if men or women like the car temperature cooler.  Just as the post says the results are just astonishing…i'm being sarcastic of course.  Anyways, here's an excerpt from the post.

"A new survey from the UK's Kwik-Fit chain of repair shops apparently proves once and for all that men like it cooler in the car than women. Astonishing, we know. What's more, men and women – drum roll, please – argue over the temperature inside the car. Knock us over with a feather.

In fact, nearly half of all survey respondents admit to fighting over the HVAC knobs in their cars. One final "shocker" – Women are usually the winners in these battles. In somewhat related news, water's wet and fire burns.

If you're as flabbergasted as we are over these new revelations, there's more in Kwik-Fit's press release after the break. You might also want to consider a car with dual-zone climate controls."
