F-150, Top Safety Pick

September 14, 2009

The Ford F-150 was named a "Top Safety Pick" by the Insurance Institute For Highway Safety for its front, side and rear impact test results and the availability of electronic stability control.  For a vehicle to earn this prestigious award the vehicle must get a rating of "good" in all categories and not receive any ratings of "Acceptable, Marginal, or Poor".

Here is our some of our competitors did.

Chevrolet Silverado 1500 – earned a "Good" rating in frontal test and received a "Poor" for side impact both with and without the optional side airbags.

Dodge Ram 1500 – earned a "Good" rating for frontal impact and a "Marginal" rating for side impact with the standard side airbags.

Nissan Titan – earned a "Good" rating for frontal impact, "Marginal" rating for side impact with the optional side airbags and a "Poor" rating without the side airbags.

Toyota Tundra – earned a "Good" rating for both frontal and side impact collisions but lacks other standard safety features like electronic stability control that kept it from being a "Top Safety Pick".  Additionally, the Tundra only received a 4-Star rating for frontal impact from the NHTSA compared to the F-150's 5-Star rating.

Ok, so what have we learned today?  We've learned that the F-150 is the safest full-size truck available on the market today and while most other manufactures including Toyota, Chevrolet, & Nissan make safety features optional, Ford makes them standard.  It seems to me that Ford cares more about its customers safety than other manufacturers, which is why Ford has more 5-Star safety rated vehicles and "Top Safety Picks" than ANY other manufacturer.  What could be more important than the safety of you and your family when driving in a vehicle?

Ford Work Solutions: Crew Chief

September 12, 2009

Yesterday I gave a brief over view of the Ford Work Solutions and went over the features of the in-dash computer.  Today, let me tell you about the Crew Chief feature with Ford Work Solutions.

Crew Chief, offered by Microlise, a leading provider of commercial telematic services, Crew Chief is the answer to fleet management for small to large fleet owners who need to know where their vehicles are at any time, track your vehicles and driver performance, control costs and more.

Crew Chief provides the following.

  • Real-time vehicle tracking and diagnostics
  • Critical data displays such as odometer reading, vehicle speed, tire pressure, next required service and much more
  • "Geofencing" capability that sets operational boundaries by vehicle, based upon geography or hours of operation.

Ford Work Solutions: In-Dash Computer

September 11, 2009

So what's Ford Work Solutions you might ask?  Well, it's a series of unique products, each designed to enhance the owner's productivity.  There are four key technologies around the real world needs of truck owners, contractors and fleet managers – anyone who uses their vehicle as a tool for their business.  I will go over all four of these technologies over the next few days.  Up first, the in-dash computer.

The in-dash computer is a 4 GB system that allows customers to run their business from their truck.

Features:

  • Bluetooth capability that supports hands-free, voice activated calling
  • Garmin navigation system that uses Sprint Mobile Broadband Network – Turn-by-turn voice guidance, real-time traffic, weather and fuel prices
  • Integrated applications (word processor, spreadsheet and PDF reader)
  • Wireless keyboard with integrated mouse
  • Built-in USB port to load and back up files
  • High-speed internet access via Sprint Mobile Broadband Network
  • Reliable secure access to files directly from the job site using LogMeln, giving customers the capability of a full PC – just like in their office

My take, with technologies like Ford's Work Solutions, Ford has continued to be the leader in truck sales for the last 32 years and will continue to raise the bar in the truck market.

KBB.COM Recognizes New Fords

September 7, 2009

Editors from Kelley Blue Book, www.kbb.com, have named 10 Great Cars for 10 Different Jobs to celebrate Labor Day.  Four of the available 10 slots on this list are filled by vehicles from Ford.

My take, Ford is making some of the best vehicles available today and continues to get recognition from some of the most trusted consumer sources.  Ford continues to take market share from all of its competitors both foreign and domestic and it won't be long before Ford is outselling Toyota month-in-month-out.

You can see which Ford vehicles made the list here.

2010 F-150 Raptor – Performance

July 21, 2009

The 2010 F-150 Raptor SVT is about serious capability.

There are two engine options for the new Raptor.  You can choose between a 5.4L SOHC V8 FFV engine that puts out 320 horsepower and 390 Ib.-ft. of torque, or pick the optional 6.2L SOHC V8(1) that delivers an estimated 400 horsepower and over 400 Ib.-ft of torque.  Both engines will be matted to a 6-speed automatic transmission.  When you take a look underneath you will notice the massive front skid plate that keeps the engine and transfer case protected.  There is also an electronic locking rear differential that uses a true mechanical connection to lock both the left and right axle shafts together so both turn at the same speed & with the same amount of torque.  The power is sent to the wheels via a serious 4.10 axle ratio.  Off-Road Mode – pressing this switch will initiate a Raptor specific calibration for the throttle and transmission shift-schedule.  It also modifies the ABS system and Electronic Locking Rear Differential functionality for improved off-road performance.  Hill Descent Control – allows the driver to concentrate on driving rather than having to modulate the brakes on a steep incline.  The system, when engaged, utilizes the ABS system to maintain vehicle speed.  The Raptor is Ford's first application of this technology.

Next up, we'll talk about the unique design characteristics that help set the Raptor apart from the other F-150's.

F-150 Raptor – Handling

July 20, 2009

Lets talk about the handling of the new 2010 F-150 Raptor. When you build a high performance off-road truck it's not all about horse power. It's about power, handling and protection for those components.

The chassis on the Raptor has Fox Racing shox that use a patented internal bypass system to provide position-sensitive damping for the Raptors shock absorbers. The Raptor offer an impressive 11.2 inches of suspension travel in the front and 12.1 inches of travel in the rear. Next, add unique SVT lower front control arms with the SVT logo. They are cast aluminum for light weight and help provide the extra track width for improved stability. The Raptor also uses heavy-duty upper control arms, tie-rods, and half-shafts to help ensure durability. The tires on the Raptor are SVT-tuned BF Goodrich 35-inch all-terrain T/A KO tires including a 35-inch spare tire (no donuts here). The internal construction of these tires was modified to help improve lateral firmness and the firm, tall sidewall helps the tire handle rocks and irregular surfaces commonly experienced in an off-road environment. Inside the tire is 17-inch cast aluminum wheel that was designed to absorb the impact of objects the could encounter in some of the most extreme environments.

Next, we will talk about the power under the hood now and what's coming in 2010.
