Ford Fusion wins 2010 Motor Trend Car of the Year award

November 17, 2009

Ford takes home yet another award and this time it’s the Motor TrendCar of the Year” award.  The all-new 2010 Ford Fusion took the honors as being Motor Trend’s 2010 Car of the year.  Here is a post from autoblog.com.

For the first time ever, Motor Trend announced the winner of its annual Car of the Year award this afternoon live via webcast. Though the field of 23 contenders was highly competitive this year (follow the jump for a complete list), we guessed immediately that the winner was a Ford as soon as the webcast came online. How’d we know? The fact they were broadcasting the announcement from Ford World Headquarters in Detroit was a not-so-subtle clue. The Fusion, Taurus and Mustang were all in the running, but it was Ford’s redesigned mid-size sedan, the Fusion, that took home the coveted Golden Calipers.

In retrospect, the choice is a solid one and not all that surprising. The Fusion was extensively reworked for the 2010 model year and features a new exterior design, new models and new powertrains. Ford offers a four-cylinder model, two strong V6 options and a full-on parallel hybrid variant, which means buyers should have no trouble finding a Fusion that fits their needs. And indeed they have, as the Fusion has already broken its own yearly sales record – with two months left to go.

Like MT, we’re big fans of the Fusion here at Autoblog, and even have high hopes that one day it could be the domestic car that knocks the Toyota Camry and Honda Accord from atop their perches as the best selling cars in the States. That said, this Ford still has a long way to go. Toyota has sold nearly twice as many Camry models as the Fusion so far this year, and the Accord and Nissan Altima are still flashing their taillights at Ford’s CoTY winner. It’s not just demand, as Ford doesn’t even have the production capacity at the moment to match Camry sales, and it doesn’t help that the Mercury Milan siphons off a few potential Fusion customers, as well.

Nevertheless, this is less about what the Fusion could be in the future than what it is today: the 2010 Motor Trend Car of the Year. Congrats to Ford and the Fusion team.

Ford Posts $1 Billiion Profit in 3rd Quarter

November 2, 2009

Ford Motor Company surprised everyone again when they announced their third quarter results by posting a profit of $1 Billion.  The latest results signal that Ford's turnaround is on more solid ground. The company lost more than $14.6 billion last year and hasn't posted a full-year profit since 2005. While it made a profit in the second quarter, that was mainly due to debt reductions that cut its interest payments.

Ford, based in Dearborn, Mich., reported third-quarter net income of $997 million, or 29 cents per share. Its profit forecast for 2011 was a step above previous guidance of break-even or better for the year.

Ford's key North American car and truck division posted a pretax profit of $357 million, the division's first quarter in the black since early 2005. Ford cited higher pricing, lower material costs and increased market share for the improvement.

Excluding one-time items, Ford earned 26 cents per share, blowing away analysts' expectations of a loss of 12 cents.

The earnings came despite an $800 million revenue drop. But Ford said it cut costs by $1 billion during the quarter, accomplished through layoffs in North America and Europe, reduced pension and retiree health care costs and improvements in productivity and product development.

Chief financial officer Lewis Booth said the company took in $1.3 billion more than it spent in the quarter, an improvement over its $1 billion cash burn in the second quarter.

"That's a huge deal," Booth said.

Ford's revenue fell $800 million for the quarter, to $30.9 billion, due mainly to its financial services arm, Ford Motor Credit, making fewer loans.

But the division still posted a pretax profit of $677 million, and revenue from auto operations rose slightly to $27.9 billion.

Ford also has benefited from consumer goodwill after it declined government bailout money and didn't go into bankruptcy over the summer as GM and Chrysler did. Ford grabbed sales from its rivals, posting the largest increase in market share of any automaker in September. Ford expects an overall gain in U.S. market share in 2009, a feat it hasn't accomplished since 1995.

Ford has clearly been on the right path and is proving to the world that they are hear to stay unlike its domestic competitors GM & Chrysler.  What are your thoughts on Ford's progress?

Consumer Reports: Ford Quality Among the Best

October 29, 2009

DEARBORN — Already producing world-class initial quality, Ford now is the only U.S. domestic automaker with world-class reliability, according to Consumer Reports, which released details Tuesday of its 2009 Annual Car Reliability Survey.

The magazine's news release heralded the company’s quality improvement, stating in the headline that "Ford Secures Place Among World's Most Reliable Carmakers."

According to the Consumer Reports release, "Ford's sustained production of vehicles that are as dependable – or better than – some of the industry's best dispels the notion that only Japanese manufacturers make reliable cars.  Other than the Toyota Prius, the reliability of the 4-cylinder Fusion and Milan ranks higher than that of any other family sedan.  Both of those Ford Motor Company products continue to beat the Honda Accord and Toyota Camry, while the upscale Lincoln MKZ tops its rivals, the Acura TL and Lexus ES."

David Champion, senior director of Consumer Reports' Automotive Test Center, had additional praise for Ford's trio of mid-size sedans.

"It's rare for Consumer Reports to see family sedans from domestic carmakers continue to beat the reliability scores of such highly regarded Japanese models as the Camry and Accord," said Champion in the news release.

Overall, about 90 percent of Ford, Lincoln and Mercury products were rated average or better reliability in the Consumer Reports survey.

"The Ford team has a commitment to be world class in quality, and we’ve made consistent strides over the last five years," said Bennie Fowler, group vice president, Ford Global Quality.  "Today is a great day for us and for our customers, to have such a highly regarded third party – Consumer Reports — recognize us for what we already know."

The Ford Mustang V-6 was among the most reliable vehicles in the "Sporty Cars/Coupes and Convertibles" category.  The new Ford Flex also performed well in the study.

Consumer Reports says its 2009 reliability survey is based on responses on more than 1.4 million vehicles owned or leased by subscribers to the magazine or its Web site.  The survey was conducted in the spring of 2009 and covers model years 2000 to 2009.
